LOS ANGELES (May 10, 2020) – The LA KISS (2-6) battled the Cleveland Gladiators (7-0) for the second time this season with a final score of 42-45 Saturday evening.
The first quarter began with an early touchdown by Cleveland’s Dominic Goodman on an 8-yard pass from Shane Austin. Aaron Pettrey completed the kick taking an early lead. Shortly after was a 52-yard field goal return by Gladiators’ Dominic Jones, but was followed with a failed kick attempt by Pettrey. The KISS fought back with a 10-yard completion to Donovan Morgan from J.J. Raterink followed by a completed kick from Kenny Spencer.
The second quarter proved to be yet another battle for the LA KISS, Cleveland started off the quarter with a 20-yard pass to Tyrone Collins, followed with a completed kick from Pettrey. Later in the half, the Gladiators continued to put points on the board with a completed pass from Austin to Thyron Lewis. To finish up the half, KISS QB Raterink had a 12-yard pass to A.J. CRUZ making it 14-27, Gladiators lead at the half.
The KISS came out firing in the second half with a 12-yard interception return by defensive powerhouse Beau Bell. Spencer’s kick was good just to follow. Later in the quarter the Gladiators fired back with a 14-yard pass from Austin to Lewis and a 2-point conversion by Chris Dieker, making it 21-35 Cleveland with 8:45 left in the third. KISS responded when Raterink rushed the end zone for a touchdown followed by a completed kick by Spencer, 28-35 Gladiators still lead. Cleveland continued to maintain the lead with a 14-yard pass from Austin to Goodman making it 28-42 with 1:33 left in the third.
The fourth quarter started off promising for the KISS when Raterink had a 24-yard completed pass to Maurice Williams followed by a completed kick by Spencer making it 35-42 Gladiators with 11:05 left in the game. KISS were able to tie it up with 8:10 left in the game after a 22-yard interception by Matt Estrada and a completed kick by Spencer leaving it 42-42. In a fight to the end, Cleveland sealed the deal with a final 16-yard field goal by Pettrey to make the final score 42-45 Cleveland.
Next week, Los Angeles is on the road again and will face the Pittsburgh Power on May 17 in Week 10 of the 2014 AFL Season. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. (PDT). Single game tickets are still available at ticketmaster.com or the Honda Center box office.
