When the LA KISS announced that Omarr Smith would be the new Head Coach of Southern California’s most exciting football team last November, every player and coach across the league took notice. This is because Coach Smith wins ArenaBowl Championships; there is just no other way to put it. In his 15 years in the AFL, as a player and a coach, Smith has won seven ArenaBowls. In fact, he is tied with the late Coach Tim Marcum for the most ArenaBowl Championships in AFL history. Although Coach Smith is a first time Head Coach, his Championship pedigree is second to none.
Coach Smith most recently was the Assistant Head Coach of the San Jose SaberCats from 2014 to 2015. The first year Head Coach joins the LA KISS after winning ArenaBowl XXVIII and posting a 20-1 record with San Jose last season. During his tenure as a coach in San Jose, Smith's SaberCats boasted the most high-powered defense in the league. Coach Smith also spent three seasons as the Arizona Rattlers’ Defensive Coordinator, where his defense led the Rattlers to ArenaBowl Championships in both 2012 and 2013.
Coach Smith is a local Southern Californian. A native of Torrance, Coach Smith attended Bishop Montgomery High School and earned all-league honors in football, basketball and track. He attended college at San Jose State. Over his four-year career as a Spartan, Coach Smith totaled 182 tackles.
After finishing his collegiate career, Coach Smith stayed in San Jose and joined the San Jose SaberCats. The defensive back played all but one of his nine AFL seasons in San Jose. As a player, he won three straight ArenaBowls from 2002-2004 and added a fourth championship in 2007. Coach Smith hung up his helmet in 2008 ending his famed career where he recorded 35 interceptions, 88 pass breakups and 475 tackles. He was inducted into the AFL’s Hall of Fame in 2014.
